Fiji 101

Hold your horses! Before we get to the exciting part, first we must know the basics about Fiji so you'll know what you can expect on your trip. Located in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean, Fiji is an island nation composed of an archipelago of more than 330 islands. Of these 330 islands, only a third of them are permanently inhabited. Its capital is Suva and most of the island-nation's people live in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, two of the country's major islands. Fiji's currency is called the Fijian dollar. Like most of the islands found in the Pacific such as Hawaii and Vanuatu, Fiji's islands and islets were created through volcanic activity that started more than 100 million years ago. Because of this, you can expect to see unique landscapes in the islands that you won't see anywhere else. Most of Fiji's visitors come from Australia, New Zealand, and United States. If you're planning a visit, you can get there by flying into the main gateway to the country, the Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu. A number of international flights, particularly those from the three countries mentioned earler, fly regularly into Fiji. There are also a number of domestic flights and airports scattered across Fiji to cater to those who want to visit a specific region.

Fiji's white sand beaches and crystal clear waters that turn turquoise as they go deeper are world-renown for their beauty. The country's all-year-round tropical weather is a great draw, too. As you may expect, swimming, snorkelling, and scuba diving are the most popular activities in Fiji so you will definitely be at home here. You can also go island-hopping and sailing. The regions of Nadi, the Coral Coast, Denarau Island, and Mamanuca Islands are popular destinations for swimming in Fiji. You may also want to check out the Laucala Island Resort, which is dubbed by CNN as one of the 15 most beautiful island hotels in the world. If you don't have time to visit it, there are many other world-class and five-star resorts and hotels in Fiji you can check out. Pristine beaches are not the only tourist attractions you can enjoy in Fiji. The island-nation has also a number of destinations that can satisfy your thirst for adventure. For starters, you can swap your mens swim trunks for something more comfy and explore the Botanical Gardens of Thursten in Suva, or the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, or the Colo-I-Suva Forest Park. There are also guided tours that you can take part in or if you're up for something exciting, you can go white-water rafting, parasailing, or sky-diving among other activities.
