Whether you are a tourist or local, everyone loves swimming at Bondi Beach. Located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, the beach is an Australian icon, and arguably the country’s most famous beach! The sand is white, the waves perfect and the water fantastic for all types of swimmers.
Here are Bondi Joe’s top 5 tips for swimming at Bondi Beach:
1. Think public transport
Parking at Bondi is a nightmare, so the best way to get there is via public transport. To get to Bondi, you have two options. The 333 bus to Bondi leaves from Museum Station (next to Hyde Park) in Sydney City and takes you all the way to North Bondi. The bus is the slow option, but at least you get to take in the sites of Oxford Street as you travel through Darlinghurst and Paddington. Check the Bondi bus timetable here. The bus is a prepaid service only, so you will need to get an Opal card from the train station or newsagent.
Alternatively, you can catch the train from Town Hall or Martin Place to Bondi Junction station. The only trick here is that Bondi Junction is not close to Bondi Beach (you can’t walk it!). You’ll still need to get a bus from Bondi Junction to Bondi Beach.
2. Swim between the flags when swimming at Bondi!
The lifeguards at Bondi Beach are just as famous as the beach itself. Be sure to follow their signs and swim between the flags. The water might be inviting and calling you to come swim, but be careful of the waves and swell, especially if you aren’t a strong swimmer. Lots of people get rescued every year at Bondi, so be careful, and if you aren’t a strong swimmer, don’t go in too deep!
3. Be sun smart
Nothing ruins a day at the beach or a holiday like getting sunburnt. The Australian sun is harsh, even on overcast days where the UV index remains extreme. You’ll need a good sunscreen, a hat and t-shirt to cover up. Remember to reapply the sunscreen every few hours! You can easily get sunscreen at the shops near the beach if you forget to bring some with you.
4. Keep an eye on your friends (and valuables!)
Remember to keep safe and keep an eye on your friends when swimming at Bondi. Let your mates know when you go swimming or walk off to the shops and keep track of where they are to ensure everyone stays safe. Sydney is a safe city and Bondi a great, safe place to be – but always make sensible decisions and let people know where you are, especially in the large crowds in summer.
Always keep your valuable safe and secure.
5. Be fashionable!
And lastly, of course you need to look fashionable at the beach. Men, forget the budgie smugglers! If you are over 30 years old and don’t surf, it’s time to forget the surf brands. Of course, we know a great brand of men’s swimwear inspired by Bondi – so remember to pack your Bondi Joe’s and be fashionable on Australia’s most famous beach!
