Brighton Beach is one of Melbourne's favourite beaches, and swimming at Brighton Beach is an iconic activity for Melburnians. If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, all you have to do is pack your favourite men's swimwear and spend a day on the bay at Brighton. Located in the affluent beach-side suburb of Brighton that fronts Port Phillip Bay, the beach is just 11 kilometres away from Melbourne CBD so nice and close for a summer dip.
Swimming at Brighton Beach
To get to Brighton Beach, you can ride a bus or the Sandringham train. Alternatively, you can bring your own vehicle as it is just a 30-minute drive from Melbourne's city centre. There's a pay car park near the beach so you rest assured that your car's in a safe place as you spend the day frolicking at the beach.
For those who aren't familiar with the area, the truth is Brighton Beach is really the name of three different segments of Port Phillip Bay. There's Upper Brighton Beach and Middle Brighton Beach, which is famous for its sea baths and pier that have been servicing visitors since 1881. But perhaps the most popular part of Brighton Beach is Dendy Street Beach.
Dendy Street Beach is well-known for its colourful beach huts. If you've read quite a few international travel magazines and visited a number of travel websites, you've probably come across photographs of these beach huts because they are among the most photographed locations in Melbourne. These colourful beach huts, or "bathing boxes" as the locals call them, were built during the Victorian era. They are heritage-protected and still functional even up to this day. As a matter of fact, they are highly sought after by the local residents.
Brighton Beach's waters are generally calm, which makes the beach an excellent location for bathing and swimming for people of all ages. What's more, lifeguards regularly patrol the three beaches to ensure the safety of visitors. Brighton Beach has a grassy foreshore which is perfect for those who want to play ball games or go on a picnic. There are also separate walking and cycling paths in the area so if you want to take a stroll and see beautiful views of the Melbourne skyline, there are many choice locations in Brighton Beach that will allow you to do so.
Other Things to Do at Brighton Beach
Once you have finished swimming at Brighton Beach's calm waters and fine, golden sands, there are other things to do in the area. As such, trade in your men's swim shorts for something casual and explore Church Street, where you can do a lot of shopping and dining. A number of cafes and restaurants line this vibrant strip offering scrumptious meals for locals and visitors alike.
Brighton Beach is also famous for its numerous op shops and charity stores. From clothes and toys, to homeware, furniture, and other quirky items, you'll surely find quality pre-loved items that come in bargain prices.
